Kay H. Smith joined the College's administration in 2005. Before retiring at the end of the 2017 academic year, Smith participated in the First-Year Experience program by teaching a First-Year Seminar, "Shakespeare on Screen," each fall semester.
Prior to coming to the College of Charleston, Smith was a faculty member and administrator at Appalachian State University where she directed the Watauga College program, Appalachian State's long-standing and innovative residential college. She subsequently chaired the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
Smith received her Ph.D. in English Renaissance literature from Emory University. She has published and presented extensively on Shakespeare and film, as well as on first-year experience, general education and residential college programs. Her most recent publication is "Documenting Student Learning: Valuing the Process," a chapter inAssessments that Drive Change in Higher Education and Improve Student Learning and Development co-authored with Raymond Barclay. In 2010-2011, Smith received a Fulbright Fellowship to Hong Kong Polytechnic University to work on developing general education and academic support programs in advance of the transition to four year degree programs at all eight Hong Kong public universities.
